Expert Glaucoma Care at Eye Exams

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that damages the optic nerve, the bundle of nerves that sends visual information from your eye to your brain. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to vision loss and even blindness. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment, you can protect your vision and maintain good eye health.

Glaucoma is caused by increased pressure inside the eye, called intraocular pressure (IOP). This pressure can build up when the fluid inside the eye (aqueous humor) doesn't drain properly. There are two main types of glaucoma:

Open-angle glaucoma: This is the most common type of glaucoma. The drainage channels in the eye are open but don't work as well as they should.

Angle-closure glaucoma: This is a less common type of glaucoma caused by a blockage of the drainage channels. This can happen suddenly and lead to a rapid increase in IOP. Angle-Closure glaucoma is a medical emergency; if you suspect you are suffering from Angle-Closure glaucoma, seek immediate medical care

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to see an eye doctor right away.

What Are The Symptoms?

Glaucoma often develops gradually and without any early warning signs. In many cases, people with glaucoma don't experience any symptoms until they have already lost some vision. This is why it's important to get regular eye exams, especially as you get older.

However, some people with glaucoma do experience symptoms, such as:

  • Tunnel vision: Loss of peripheral vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pain or redness
  • Halos around lights
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting (rare)
